DETROIT, MI — The Michigan State Police is not asking Detroit applicants to fill out a form and wait for a callback. On Thursday, October 1, MSP recruiters take over the Northwest Activities Center on Meyers Road and run the front half of the hiring process in one morning: fitness test, written exam, application help.

Walk-ins are welcome. The catch is the clock: show up after 10:30 a.m. and you will not be allowed to test.

⚠️ Read This Before You Drive Up Meyers

Most hiring events forgive a late start. This one does not. Baseline fitness testing begins at 9 a.m. and the National Testing Network entry level law enforcement exam at 11 a.m., and because the running has to finish before the writing starts, MSP draws a hard line at 10:30 a.m. Treat it as a 9 a.m. appointment: dress to run, bring photo ID, leave room for the Lodge. The fitness portion is not a formality. MSP's recruiting FAQ points candidates toward 45 push-ups in a minute and 70 sit-ups in two minutes, plus a vertical jump and a half-mile shuttle run.

💼 The Two Jobs, and What They Pay

Recruiters are filling two roles. A trooper works road patrol and investigations out of a post. A motor carrier officer is the commercial vehicle specialist: weight enforcement, hazardous materials and truck safety inspections, which around here means freight moving toward the bridge.

Both start at the MSP recruit school, and the pay is public. The department's Become a Trooper page lists $5,180 a month with benefits during training, more than $67,000 a year for a new trooper before overtime, and $100,500 at ten years. For a job needing a diploma and no degree, those are legible numbers.

✅ Who Qualifies, and Who Does Not

Several of MSP's published minimums disqualify people who would otherwise be strong candidates.

21 by recruit school graduation, with a high school diploma or G.E.D. College is recommended, not required.
Michigan residency and a valid Michigan driver's license before recruit school graduation.
MCOLES standards for hearing and visual acuity.
No felony convictions. Misdemeanors involving weapons, sexual conduct, abuse, domestic violence and controlled substances also disqualify, and an expunged conviction can still count against you.
Your driving record in the past two years: not eight or more points, not three or more moving violations, not two or more crashes.

That last one quietly removes a lot of qualified applicants. Pull your record before the drive, not after.

🗺️ One Week Later, Same Address

The Northwest Activities Center also houses a Detroit at Work career center, and on Thursday, October 8, from 1 to 4 p.m., it hosts a general career fair with more than a dozen employers. Different event, different day, different requirements. Detroit at Work lists behavioral technicians, child care assistants, engineers, mechanics, customer service, security, project managers, ramp agents and preschool teachers.
